GitHub, GitLab & PR Code Review MCP Servers: Head-to-Head Setup Comparison & Reproducible Latency Method
We did not invent a leaderboard. Instead: what each code-review MCP server actually supports, a real handshake probe we ran on 25 Oct 2026, and a script so you can measure latency from your own network.
Published MCP latency leaderboards usually measure something nobody runs in production. Real review latency is dominated by the size of the diff and your model, not the server. This comparison sticks to what we could verify: transport, auth model, read-only controls and review tools per server, plus a real unauthenticated handshake probe from one UK host on 25 Oct 2026. Use the included script to reproduce the measurement from your own network.

1. Why we are not publishing a latency leaderboard
A fair tool-call benchmark needs authenticated access to every service, the same repository and pull request, the same client, and many runs from several regions. Results also shift with each vendor's deploys. Publishing a single-number ranking without that would be fabrication. What we can publish honestly is a feature comparison, a handshake probe that anyone can rerun, and a method for measuring the part that matters to you.
2. Feature comparison for pull request review
Values come from vendor documentation and the LightState catalog as of 25 Oct 2026.
| Server | Pulse | Transport | Auth | Read-only control | Review-relevant tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub MCP | 81 | Remote Streamable HTTP or local stdio (Docker) | OAuth or PAT | /readonly URL suffix, --read-only, GITHUB_READ_ONLY=1 | pull_request_read, pull_request_review_write, add_comment_to_pending_review, request_copilot_review |
| GitLab MCP | 82 | HTTP built into GitLab (18.6+), or stdio via mcp-remote | OAuth (mcp scope) or fine-grained PAT | Toolsets header limits exposed tools | Merge request tools (names vary by version) |
| Graphite MCP | 94 | Local stdio via gt mcp (beta) | Graphite CLI auth | Not documented | Create and manage stacked PRs |
| Greptile MCP | 92 | Remote HTTP | OAuth or org API key | Not documented | trigger_code_review, list_code_reviews, get_code_review, list_custom_context |
| Linear MCP | 84 | Remote HTTP | OAuth (scope read write) | Scope at OAuth consent | Issue and project context for the PR |
| Sentry MCP | 83 | Remote HTTP | OAuth | Scope at OAuth consent | Production errors for files under review |
3. What we measured: unauthenticated handshake probe
On 25 Oct 2026 at about 09:14 (UK time, GMT) we sent the same JSON-RPC initialize request 11 times to each listing's remote endpoint from a single cloud host in the UK, and recorded the response code and the median total time. A 401 here is healthy: it means the server is up and correctly demanding auth. These numbers measure network distance and edge routing to the first response, not how fast any tool runs, so treat them as a reachability check rather than a ranking.
| Endpoint (from listing) | Response | Median time to response | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ (GitHub MCP) | 401 + OAuth metadata | 0.66 s | Live, auth required |
| mcp.linear.app/mcp (Linear MCP) | 401 + OAuth metadata | 0.04 s | Live, auth required |
| mcp.sentry.dev/mcp (Sentry MCP) | 401 | 0.06 s | Live, auth required |
| mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp (Cloudflare MCP) | 401 | 0.04 s | Live, auth required |
| api.greptile.com/mcp (Greptile MCP) | 200, initialize succeeded (protocol 2025-03-26) | 0.62 s | Live; tools need auth to call |
| mcp.ellipsis.dev (Ellipsis MCP) | 401 | 0.77 s | Live, auth required |
| mcp.composio.dev/mcp (Composio) | 301 redirect | 0.04 s | Endpoint has moved; check vendor docs |
| getgram.ai/mcp (Gram by Speakeasy) | 301 redirect | 0.91 s | Endpoint has moved; check vendor docs |
| crhq.ai/mcp (CRHQ) | 404 | 0.37 s | Listed path not found |
4. Reproduce it yourself
Run this from the network your agents actually run in. Pass any remote MCP URLs as arguments; it prints the median of 11 runs.
5. How to benchmark what actually matters
If you need a real decision, benchmark end-to-end review time on your own repository with authenticated access.
- Pick three representative PRs: small (under 50 lines), medium (about 500 lines), large (2,000+ lines).
- Use the same client and model for every server. Clear caches between runs.
- Time three things separately: tools/list, the read call for the full diff, and the full review from prompt to drafted comments.
- Run each at least 10 times and report the median and the slowest run, not the best run.
- Record tool payload size. Large diffs usually explain slow reviews better than server speed.
6. Vendors: put your verified numbers here
If you run one of these servers and publish reproducible performance data, claim your listing so we can link to it. Sponsored placements on LightState are always labelled and never change Pulse Scores.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which code-review MCP server is fastest?
We have not found a fair public benchmark, and we did not publish one. Our unauthenticated handshake probe from a UK host showed Linear, Sentry and Cloudflare endpoints answering in well under 0.1 s and GitHub's in about 0.66 s, but that only measures time to the auth challenge, not tool speed.
Is a 401 response from an MCP endpoint bad?
No. A protected MCP server should answer an unauthenticated request with 401 and a WWW-Authenticate header pointing at its OAuth protected resource metadata. That is how clients discover how to sign in.
What dominates pull request review latency?
Usually the size of the diff returned by the read tool and the model's processing time. Restrict review to relevant files and use read tools that return only what you need.
Why did some endpoints return 301 or 404?
The URL in the listing may have moved or be wrong. A 301 means the endpoint redirects elsewhere; a 404 means the path was not found. Check the vendor's current documentation before connecting.
